Doberman Pinscher General Info

Doberman pinscher Puppy Fact Sheet

The Doberman pinscher, which is often misspelled as Doberman Pinchers, originated in Germany around the late 19th century. They are the culminationof years of very selective breeding. They take their name from Karl Friedrich Louis Doberman. Doberman crossed German Pinschers or terriers with old style German Shepherds to achieve his perfect dog. Doberman was trying to breed a large terrier for strength combined with agility and vigorous guard dog qualities. The breed was originally called the Doberman’s Dog. The name Pinscher(which means terrier) was added later.

The Doberman pinscher has been bred for a century to be an outstanding guard dog. The Doberman is an intense and energetic dog with a tremendous amount of strength and insatiable stamina. They are versatile and very easy to train. The breed is assertive and fearless, but not vicious as they are generally thought to be. The Doberman is a naturally protective dog and does not need any additional “protection” training to be a useful and efficient guard dog. The fact is he should be thoroughly socialized and broken in to his family unit when young to prevent over-protectiveness. Awareness of their intelligence and mental stimulation is very important for a well adjusted and fulfilled Doberman.

This animal must be thoroughly and consistently trained to be a good pet for your family. Training should be accomplished through positive reinforcement that will nurture the dog. Dobermans have the potential to be good family dogs if they are of good temperament, very well trained and raised with young children from an early age when they are puppies.
